In the 1950s, on a Havana rooftop and reeling from the recent passing of her father, Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926) had an epiphany. A gust of wind blew a hanging laundry sheet (the very one her father had been lying on when he died) against a pipe and a wall, and in its resulting form she discovered an entirely new approach to her work. She abandoned painting on flat surfaces and began pulling canvas tautly over oddly-shaped wooden armatures, creating curved peaks that opened painting up from its conventionally rectangular state. Introducing three-dimensional forms to her work, Sánchez’s shift challenged the preferred frontal view of artworks by interrupting the face-on gaze and coercing it around corners.

Galerie Lelong is pleased to present Constructivist Dialogues in the Cuban Vanguard: Amelia Peláez, Loló Soldevilla & Zilia Sánchez, a group exhibition of three Cuban painters engaged in geometric and constructivist practices from the 1930s to the present. While all three painters enjoyed the support of the Lyceum women’s club gallery, a women’s social and intellectual institution in Havana, their connections go beyond gender. The exhibition reveals shared interests in architecture and space, as well as pattern and color, demonstrating geometric abstraction’s long history in Cuba. Zilia Sánchez will be present for the opening reception on Thursday, May 5 from 6-8pm.

Galerie Lelong is pleased to present its first solo exhibition with Cuban-born artist Zilia Sánchez, Heróicas Eróticas en Nueva York. As a global citizen who has lived in Cuba, Spain, New York, and now Puerto Rico, Sánchez’s hybridized shaped canvases unite the painterly and the sculptural, the formal and the psychological, and the masculine and the feminine. Only the second exhibition of Sánchez’s work in New York in over thirty years, Heróicas Eróticas en Nueva York comprises paintings made in the artist’s signature technique of stretching canvas over hand-molded wooden armatures, and spans fifty years of production. Many of the works on view have never been seen outside of Sánchez’s adopted home of Puerto Rico. The artist will be present for the opening on Friday, May 2 from 6-8pm.
