Body Tracks foregrounds the life and art of Ana Mendieta (1948-1985), who despite being a prolific performance and body artist from the 1970s is unknown to many artists under forty. Her career serves as an illustration of feminist art practices of the 1970s and the backlash against that movement in the mid 1980s.

Ana Mendieta – Body Tracks, at SAW Video & Gallery 101, Ottawa, Canada

Ottawa Start

May 27, 2011

On Friday June 10th, SAW Video & Gallery 101 will launch Body Tracks, a group exhibition examining the art and life of Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta.

A prolific performance artist and filmmaker with strong feminist leanings, Mendieta rose to prominence in the mid-1970’s before her mysterious death in 1985. She often used the body as both a canvas and a paintbrush, her early work exploring blood rituals, crime scenes and physical abuse. Throughout her career, Mendieta’s work was grounded in the intrinsic connections of the natural world.
