The exhibition features the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Francis Alÿs, Cy Twombly, Ban Jas Ader, Félix González-Torres, Jim Hodges, Cerith Wyn Evans, Wolfgang Tillmans, Ann Hamilton, Andrés Carretero, Hreinn Fridfinnsson, Ana Mendieta, Douglas Gordon, Tomas Glassford, Salla Tykkä, Knut Asdam, and Arturo Herrera, among others.

Online Seminar “To Observe, to Think, to Write: Criticism in the Visual Arts”

From May 23 to July 31 of 2011, the Instituto de Estudios Críticos will present the online seminar entitled “To Observe, to Think, to Write: Criticism in the Visual Arts.” Moderated by Cuban independent art critic and curator, Juan Antonio Molina, the seminar will rely on a theoretical and practical methodology, to develop tools that will allow participants to improve, in an independent manner, abilities necessary for writing exhibition reviews, critiquing artworks, and creating essays on contemporary visual art themes. The seminar is directed at individuals whose interests are connected to the analysis, criticism, and theory and practice of visual arts.

Baruj Salinas: colores en el trópico

El ensayista y cronista mexicano examina la obra de un gran pintor cubano.

Como sucede con lo que me entusiasma, cuando me enfrento a la pintura de Baruj Salinas, intento atenerme solamente a mis reacciones “puramente estéticas”. Y quiero eliminar de mis impresiones o juicios los “elementos impuros”… Fracaso de manera invariable. Ante los cuadros que me absorben, siempre combino la respuesta instantánea (el registro corpóreo y anímico del gusto) con las evocaciones literarias y visuales. Ante cada cuadro combino reacciones inmediatas con la evocación de fragmentos de poemas, de nombres de escritores y pintores, de vivencias personales o culturales, de ideas por desarrollar o de ideas por desechar, de obras antagónicas o colindantes, de polémicas íntimas sobre preferencias y rechazos.
