Anthony Goicolea at Spinello Projects. “Spinello Projects presents ‘Forever Endeavor And Ever,’ the gallery debut solo exhibition by Cuban American artist Anthony Goicolea. Widely known for his photography, Goicolea, solely focuses on new paintings on canvas and mylar for this exhibition. Although he has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, this is Goicolea’s first gallery solo exhibition in the United States in over a decade.
Anthony Goicolea started his artistic career in the mid 90’s as a photographer. This was a period of social stigmatization associated with homosexuality and AIDS, with an overarching “don’t ask don’t tell” approach to LGBTQ+ issues and culture. Almost 30 years later in the midst of his painting career, he is still influenced by would-be mentors and photographers whose lives and careers were cut short by AIDS, such as, Robert Mapplethorpe, Stanley Stellar, Mark Morrisroe, and Peter Hujar, among others.”
