“Metallic”, a solo exhibition of works by Jorge Enrique at Waltman Ortega Fine Art, Miami

November 14 – December 16, 2015

Opening: November 14, 3-7 p.m

In the most recent works by Jorge Enrique, the idea of beauty is at the center of the artist’s practice. While Enrique’s artwork of the last two decades communicated the irony that minimalist and abstract works could actually represent the deconstruction of an unforgiving cacophonous urban environment, and the gritty “truth” of graffitied texts and images could not be trusted, beauty in Enrique’s work has always been present.

Drawn to the intellectual spareness of abstraction and conceptualism, Enrique nevertheless uses a wide range of media – drawing, painting, silkscreen, monoprints, layered lifted images, sculpture and installation. And Enrique’s practice is very much concerned with materials shaping wood, sheet metal, paper, paint, epoxy, and resin into complex objects that undermine the ordinariness of their materials. These works are deliberate palimpsests – artworks whose history can be seen through the eroded exposure of under layers, visible by erasing, abrading, scraping and layering. The complex physicality of Enrique’s surfaces recalls ideas of age, decay, re-use, hidden images, and layers of meaning.

Waltman Ortega Fine Art presents “Drawings”, a solo exhibition of works by Cesar Santos.
The exhibition is comprised of Santos’ most recent oil and mixed media paintings, drawings and sculptural work. The show opens to the public with the artist reception on Sept. 10, from 5-9 p.m., and remains on view through Oct. 6, 2015. The artist will be present during the vernissage.

A riff from his typically traditional style, in this series the artist adds to his classically technical approach with child-like drawings that reveal a more nuanced, subconscious rendering of his subjects.

Barcode & Closer

November 10 – December 22, 2012

Waltman Ortega Fine Art presents two solo exhibitions: “BARCODE” by Jorge Enrique and “CLOSER” by Jérôme Lagarrigue.

“Barcode” is a chapter in Jorge Enrique’s ongoing series called “Urban D-construction” (2009-2012) featuring recent works ranging in sizes and formats.  With his mixed media works the artist offers a specific perspective on the dizzying shifts between man and machine that he describes as “revved up minimalism” – minimal palette of colors that never mix; and a use of very simple elements multiplied in a very intense repetitive manner.

Jérôme Lagarrigue has a contemporary eye, formatted to the measure of new image technologies. The prism of the photographic lens and the blur of freeze frames are the cornerstones of his approach. This dematerialization allows him to get as close as possible to people and their flesh. The paintings in “Closer” exhibition present us with over-detailed bodies, as though the aim was to make them lose their own reality and authorize a metaphysics of introspection.
